Thanks to our four decades of experience in the fruit growing industry, we are ideally placed to offer outstanding horticultural advice and training.

With this in mind, our experienced and highly skilled team presents a range of courses about successful fruit growing.

Developed to suit the needs of farm and fruit industry technical staff and managers, our live training courses cover a range of topics and are fully grounded in proven scientific principles so that attendees can develop an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the sector that they can then apply to their own practice.

New for 2024, with the help of clients and past attendees, we have introduced new levels focussing on Progression - from essential practical courses through to courses that explore the science of fruit growing in greater depth.

For enterprises seeking courses for sizeable groups or requiring a course tailored to more specific needs, we can put together bespoke courses delivered on site or online, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to find out more about what we can offer.
All courses are BASIS and NRoSO registered where applicable.

Berry Course - Level 1 :

Level 1 - Practical Growing Courses
These courses explain scientific principles where appropriate but focus on key points and improving general crop knowledge and growth methods.

General irrigation management : full-day module

A practical course providing essential information for those relatively new to a role in irrigation.
Water use by plants, understanding soils and substrates, and monitoring systems.

General IPM - Berries : full day module

This practical course provides essential information for those with little or no knowledge of the pests and diseases of berry crops. If you are not sure how to distinguish an aphid from a weevil but are in a role that is beginning to demand that you have a better understanding of what to look out for and how problems might be solved, this course is for you!

Berry Course - Level 2 :

Strawberry, Cane Fruit and Blueberry
Level 2 - General Courses
Courses cover important scientific and technical concepts where knowledge empowers in-field decision makers.
Many involved in practical decision-making come into farming without a background in fruit farming or knowledge of biological sciences. The course is designed to provide an injection of relevant knowledge which will support practical management decisions. This course has also helped many in marketing and quality assurance roles to gain a better understanding of production methods.

Evolved from our Strawberry Course, the content has widened to include information about cane fruit and blueberry growing. We recommend attending this course before joining us for level three courses.

Know the biology of berry plants, their morphology, physiology, and annual growth cycles. Choose the best growing systems and the factors influencing their success.

Learn more about pests, diseases and beneficial organisms: Recognise them and develop a better understanding of lifecycles and the interaction between environment, crop and pest or disease.

Find more about how nutrition affects plant performance and gain a basic understanding of soil and substrate feed programmes.

The course also concludes with a module devoted to the study of production and investment costs, bringing focus to many of the practical ideas concerning the manipulation of crop timing discussed in other modules.

Tree Fruit Course - Level 1 :

Level 1 - Practical Growing Courses
These courses explain sceintific principles where appropriate but focus on key points and improving general crop knowledge and growth methods.

General IPM - Top Fruit : full day module

This practical course provides essential information for those with little or no knowledge of the pests and diseases of top fruit.

Tree Fruit Course - Level 2 :

Apples, Pears and Stone Fruit
Level 2 - General Courses
Courses cover important scientific and technical concepts where knowledge empowers in-field decision makers.
Having the right soil nutrition, planting systems, crop loads and pruning all contribute to the growing of a successful orchard. Of similar importance is an ability to identify pests, diseases, and beneficial organisms, combined with knowing how to use prediction models.

This knowledge is essential as we seek to reduce reliance on, conventional pesticides and seek to better integrate production systems with a healthy natural environment. Having grown a crop, quality at and after harvest becomes vital. These depend on identifying optimum harvesting methods, picking dates, storage regimes.

The course concludes with a module devoted to the study of the market value of top fruit and production/investment costs, e.g. planting costs, profitability, investment appraisal techniques etc.

One-day course
The course covers both theoretical and practical aspects of fertigation, in particular the course includes detailed discussion on the interpretation of laboratory analysis results, live or recorded demonstrations of laboratory tests for pH and EC), a titration workshop to show how much acid is required to neutralise hard waters and an interactive exercise to show how FAST advisors use our feed recipe workbook.

Those who are relatively new to the practice of fertigation may find it helpful to attend the nutrition and physiology modules of the FAST School of Fruit Growing Top Fruit  courses before signing up to this more advanced course.
